Turn off your system: If you are uncertain of the data reliability issue at hand, writing additional information to the disk may cause additional RAID data loss.  It is highly recommended to TURN OFF the system right away.

Strange noises originating from system: Clicking, whining, tapping or grinding sounds may indicate a problem with the disk, TURN OFF the system right away.

Keep a record of events: Document the events that took place during the failure so you can remember the circumstances later.  It is highly suggested to let a RAID recovery engineer attempt RAID recovery. However, if you have already attempted to fix the drive/array, document each attempt and its' outcome accordingly for future reference.

Label / Number RAID drives: Write the drives location (or arrangement) in the RAID array.  Label the first drive as 0.  Document which drive you think is failing.

Do not run diagnostics on the disk: Executing defragment or repair utilities can cause additional corruption of the RAID array and hinder RAID recovery process.

Do not change the sequence of the drives: Changing the position (or order) of the disks in a RAID array can cause corruption of the array itself (causing data to be overwritten).

Perform backups on secondary systems only: Restoring backups on the affected system should never be attempted, always restore backups to a system other than the one that is affected.  Writing/Reading information to the disks of the failed RAID array can circumvent the RAID recovery process.

Use only new replacement disks: When attempting to rebuild an array, always use brand new disks as a replacement.  If you rebuild a RAID array with a drive that was part of a previous RAID system; RAID configuration data may be overwritten causing corruption of the array itself.
